Class # : 338       Philosophy Series III: Human Knowledge (Epistemology)
Meeting Dates : 3/11/2009
Time : 10:00 AM-11:55 AM
No of Seminars :  1
Facilitator : Tom Lombardo, Ph.D.

One of the central concerns in philosophy is the nature and limits of human knowledge. All other major questions of philosophy, or for that matter, basic issues of life depend on addressing the nature of knowledge – what is it and how do we get it? What can we know – really know? Can we be certain of anything, or are all human beliefs and perceptions fallible? There are theories of knowledge that we will explore and compare: Knowledge is gained through observation (empiricism); knowledge is gained through reasoning and logic (rationalism); knowledge is gained through revelation or sacred texts; and knowledge is gained through insight and mystical intuition. Can we possess objective knowledge – can we discover the truth – or are all human beliefs subjective and truth itself nothing but a fantasy – a chimera? Are there multiple truths as opposed to one? Is knowledge a journey rather than a destination? We will examine the ideas of classical philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle, Enlightenment philosophers such as Hume and Kant, and contemporary philosophers such as Kuhn and Feyerabend. Grappling with the question of human knowledge really gets your head thinking. Dr. Tom Lombardo is Chairman of the Philosophy Department at Rio Salado College in Tempe. In this Spring term he is bringing to RISE the continuation of his new series of classes on Philosophy which was begun in the Fall term.

What is the good? Can we determine what is right and what is wrong? How do we determine what is of real value in life? Ethics and values are important issues in the history of philosophy, but also within religion, literature, and the social sciences. Ethics and values strike at the heart of human existence, since we are continually engaged in making ethical decisions and value judgments in directing our behavior and guiding our lives. We will examine and compare different theories of ethics: Kant’s idea that what is good is intrinsic to the act; Spinoza’s view that what is good is its own reward; Mill’s idea that what is good depends upon the consequences of our actions; Aristotle and Plato’s ideas that ethics is connected with happiness and the acquisition of character virtues; Western religious theory that God is the foundation of what is right and wrong and there is a clear separation between good and evil; Ayer’s view that ethics is based upon our emotional reactions to things; Fromm’s authoritarian versus humanistic theory of ethics; the relativist, Postmodern view that ethics is relative to individuals and cultures and there is no absolute right or wrong; and finally the theory of ethical evolution – that what is good is evolving within our world, or perhaps the universe as a whole. This is a continuation of the Philosophy Series being given by Dr. Tom Lombardo, Chairman of the Philosophy Department at Rio Salado College in Tempe.

Facilitator : Tom Lombardo, Ph.D.

Many would argue that the question of the existence of God is the most important issue in human life. And if there is a God, then what is God’s nature? And what is the connection between God and human life, and God and the universe at large? Is God the Creator – is God the destination? These questions have been hotly debated both in the history of philosophy and human society as a whole. These questions are so emotionally charged that frequently cultures have gone to war over them. We will look at arguments for why there must be a God, and arguments why there isn’t a God. We will consider whether we can even determine an answer to the question of God’s existence. Perhaps it is beyond our ability to know one way or another? We will look at different theories of the nature of God: Is God one with the universe, or is God outside the universe, or both? Is God static or changing? We will look at different religious perspectives, from the East and the West. Is God a “one” or a “many” – consider, for example, the Christian Trinity? We will discuss whether belief in God is necessary for people to behave ethically. We will examine the “New Atheists” who argue that belief in God is destructive to the quality of human life. Is God good for us or not? Finally we will explore the possible connections of God, science, and evolution. Do science and evolution contradict the idea that there must be a God? Dr. Lombardo is on the faculty of Rio Salado College in Tempe.

This class will continue to unfold the concept of reincarnation. Each person is a soul living on the earth plane. Reincarnation adds the idea that as souls we have many and varied lives. Eastern religions ask: Is it possible to be perfected in one life? Does the soul's growth depend on its experiences on earth? These and many other questions will be addressed in this follow-up of the class on "Understanding Reincarnation" given by Carol in the Winter 2009 term. Rev. Carol Beyer, a student of the Ancient Wisdom, earned her Ph.D. in Religious Studies. She has been an advisor for students at Sancta Sophia Seminary for over ten years. This seminary is considered a Wisdom School where spiritual axioms are integrated into all aspects of life.
